Grietjie is one of several regions that makes up the vast Balule Nature Reserve that extends from Phalaborwa in the north to Hoedspruit in the south and between the R40 and the Klaserie Nature Reserve. The reserve is completely open to the Kruger National Park ensuring that a full variety of wildlife can be encountered during your stay.
We traverse across almost 8000Ha of a mixture of Mopane/Acacia and Marula/Bushwillow bushveld including several kilometres along the Olifants River.
Phalaborwa is the only entry gate located on the boundary of the Kruger National Park and is only 45 minutes drive from the camp. This gate gives you easy access to both central and northern areas of the Kruger. Wildlife and birdwatching cruises on the Kambaku boat can be arranged on the Olifants Barrage. This activity can be combined with a game drives as our traversing now allows us to access the boat through the reserve. A view over the mining town of Phalaborwa from the top of the view point gives an amazing view of the large hole left behind, some 400m below sea level at the very bottom.
While we offer one game drive/day in the rates our main attraction is the Umgede Underground hide where everyone, whether you are a professional photogrpaher of just a wildlife lover will be enthralled by the experiences that can be had viewing game safely from ground level and mere inches from you
Phalaborwa is know as the town of two summers, with the main summer being in the hotter and wetter months of October-April, and then the cooler (but not cold!) drier months of May-September. These drier months create a great viewing opportunity of wildlife coming down to the waterhole to quench their thirst.
