Health and Climate:
Malaria:
The 2 ways to prevent contracting malaria are by taking anti malaria drugs and by taking measures to avoid being bitten. On the Elephant coast the use of antimalarial drugs (chloroquine resistant) are only recommended between October and May. If possible to stay indoors between dusk and dawn - if it is necessary to go out at night, wear long sleeves and trousers as well as socks. Use an insect repellent such as Tabbard or Mylol.
Weather:
The summer temperatures are usually between 28ºC and 30ºC with December to February being the hottest months where temperatures can reach 40ºC in some areas. The winters are never cold and temperatures are rarely below 17ºC during the day and 10ºC at night. It is advisable to take a warm jacket for game drives - even in the summer months as the early mornings and evenings on an open vehicle can be chilly. Rainfall occurs during the summer months.
Ticks:
When walking in the bush or long grass it is easy to pick up fine ticks known as pepper ticks. The best way to avoid them is to wear socks and treat exposed parts of the body with insect repellent. At the end of each day check all over the body for ticks.
Sun Burn:
February is the hottest month and temperatures can exceed 40º.The sun is at its strongest between 12h00 and 15h00. Always wear a hat and use suntan lotion (waterproof for the seaside) with a high protection factor number. Drink plenty of fluids and remember that cloud and wind are no protection against sunburn.
