Welcome to the Houw Hoek Hotel, located on the site of a toll gate established in the Dutch East Indian days.
The oldest licensed hotel in South Africa, it is situated in the heart of the Kogelberg ( Biosphere) reserve, just 80km from Cape Town and 75km from the Cape Town International Airport, you will rapidly forget congested freeways and pollution in this beautiful and peaceful environment. The hotel offers much to keep the whole
family entertained – two refreshing swimming pools, two games rooms and a
host of outdoor activities such as putt-putt and padel courts. The hotel also has two electric vehicle charge stations.
Most of the existing ground floor building dates from 1779. The upper
storey was added in 1860 and since then the hotel has been progressively
extended. The adjoining old farm buildings have been converted into
wedding and conference venues retaining their original character. Their new relaxation spa is set in the peaceful grounds of our hotel
and offers an array of luxurious treatments to soothe your body and
rejuvenate your soul. Their new, modern Loggia combines a delicious dining
experience with delightful views of the mountains and beautiful ponds.
Today, gracious old oaks, flanked by towering poplars and one of the biggest blue gum trees in South Africa, spread their sheltering branches over the historic Hotel.
Accommodation at Houw Hoek Hotel:
The hotel has 99 beautifully appointed rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. There are
double rooms as well as family rooms. There are also rooms with
inter-leading doors. Most rooms have private balconies with magnificent
views of the surrounding mountains. All rooms offer 20-channel DStv, a
minibar with tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free
Wi-Fi. Some rooms have underfloor heating and some have
air-conditioning. Please enquire. A full breakfast is included in your
room price. The hotel can sleep up to 279 guests.

Main Dining Room and Loggia
Our main restaurant seats 100 guests, serves a la carte lunches and dinners (except Saturday dinner ) and a full English breakfast daily. It also serves a very popular country home cooking Sunday lunch carvery buffet.
The hotel has two restaurants; a traditional, comfortable dining room and their brand new loggia. The dining room seats 120 guests and serves
delicious à la carte lunches and dinners daily. It is also well-known
for our scrumptious breakfast buffet. The new open-plan loggia has
panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and seats up to 182
guests. The hotel menu blends traditional South African cuisine
with modern innovations from renowned chefs, complimented by an award-winning wine list including the
finest local wines. There are halaal and vegetarian options available
too. On Saturdays we host our famous Dinner Dance.
Barn
The traditional Saturday Dinner/Dance is held in the Barn in which a 5 course set menu is served. Dinner is served from 20h00 and the music starts at 21h30. This venue can also used for weddings on any other nights or lunch.
Veranda, Garden & Pub
A la carte Lunches & dinners, light lunches, hot & cold beverages are served daily on the veranda, in the garden and in the Stagecoach Bar – the oldest licensed pub in South Africa.
The Houw Hoek Hotel is peacefully positioned in the Kogelberg Nature
Reserve, in the heart of mother nature. There is so much to do in the
area – animal encounters, archery, canoeing, zip-lining, fishing and
horse riding to name but a few. There are endless hiking and mountain
bike trails that start at the hotel. There are top-ranked golf courses
nearby. There is also much wine and beer tasting to be done, as Elgin
has recently been recognised as one of South Africa’s top wine-producing
regions.

You may simply want to put your feet up and relax, but for those of you that are more energetic, our family-friendly hotel offers many exciting things to do. Experience endless entertainment during your stay with our exciting activities, including putt-putt, volleyball, and padel.
If you are visiting us on a conference, we offer the perfect opportunity for team building with our many outdoor activities. There are also incredible hiking and mountain biking trails that start right here at the hotel. For the warmer months, we have two refreshing swimming pools. We also have two indoor games rooms with much on offer, for both young and old.
We have a farm stall where you can purchase snacks, preserves, fresh foods and other delicious items. In our Wine Room, you can taste and purchase our own and some local wines. Our funky gift shop has a broad selection of clothing, decor, gifts and much more.

From Cape Town International Airport:
- Head south on Airport Ring Rd and proceed for 950 m;
- Turn left toward Airport Approach Rd and proceed for 180 m;
- Continue straight onto Airport Approach Rd and proceed for 190 m;
- Take the Borcherds Quarry Road/M22 ramp to M18/Nyanga/M10/Bellville and proceed for 290 m;
- Keep right at the fork to continue toward Borcherds Quarry Rd/M22 and proceed for 60 m;
- Turn right onto Borcherds Quarry Rd/M22 and proceed for 1.2 km;
- Use the left lane to merge onto N2 via the ramp to Somerset and proceed for 63.8 km;
- Turn left and proceed for 400 m to reach Hoek Hotel.
