Our luxury self catering accommodation in Kamberg Valley is the perfect place for you to relax and unwind and explore the Midlands Meander and the Southern Drakensberg.
Our 27-hectare smallholding has two dams and a river running through it. The smaller of the two dams is a feeder dam to our main dam. The reeds on the small dam are home to a multitude of different bird species. Our larger dam is home to some bass. On top of all this our views of the Drakensberg Mountains are spectacular.
Enjoy a walk on the property to the Little Mooi River, try your luck in our fishing dam, or just relax, explore the local area and take in the beauty of the nature all around you in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains.
There are many different activities to enjoy close by and Kamberg Valley Hideaway is the perfect place to base yourself.
Fly fishing
Kamberg Valley Hideaway is located very close to Highmoor Nature Reserve, a renowned fly fishing location. They have two well stocked trout dams where you can try your luck with a fly rod. On our property itself, we currently have some bass, so you are welcome to spin or fly fish for some bass.
Photography Courses
We offer photography courses to beginners and novice photographers. We have a number of different workshops available, or if you are keen to learn a specific photographic technique, contact us and we will tailor-make a photography course for you.
Sunrise and sunset are stunning in the Southern Drakensberg, so Kamberg Valley Hideaway is the perfect location to master your landscape photography skills.
On top of that, we have a multitude of different bird species building their nests, searching for food or preening themselves, so if you are keen to hone your birding photography skills, you have plenty of opportunity here at Kamberg Valley Hideaway.
Birding
If you are a keen birder, our dams and the Little Mooi River at the bottom of our property attract a large number of different bird species. Plus we have Kamberg Nature Reserve and Highmoor Nature Reserve nearby, so this area is a great location to spend some time identifying the numerous bird species that live or visit the area at certain times of the year.
In addition, there is the Hlatikulu Crane Centre a mere 20 minutes drive away and this is a wonderful place to visit. It is a rescue, rehabilitation and captive breeding facility for all three of South Africa's crane species.
Close to Giants Castle there is also the renowned Vulture Restaurant. This does need to be booked, so if you are interested in visiting, please let us know before you arrive, so that we can make the necessary arrangements for you.
Walking and Hiking in the Drakensberg
If you enjoy walking and hiking, Kamberg Valley Hideaway is ideally located close to three Nature Reserves, which are all part of the Drakensberg World Heritage Site.
Kamberg Nature Reserve
Kamberg Nature Reserve is approximately 11 kms away. From here, walking tours are conducted to Games Pass Shelter, arguably the most important rock art site in South Africa. It was there that the art of the Bushmen was first seriously studied in the 1920s. The panel dubbed "the Rosetta Stone" was found in the Games Pass Shelter and it is was from this panel that the connection between the art and the supernatural was first discerned.
The cave is easily reached in one hour along a very well constructed path. There are several distinct panels, starting with some faded scenes, then the Rosetta Stone, and finally the main attraction which is a section a few metres across where numerous polychrome eland seem to walk right across the rock wall.
Guided walks to Games Pass Shelter include a high quality film at the Rock Art Centre, which puts the cave and its paintings into a universal perspective. These guided tours are a great attraction and simply should not be missed.
Highmoor Nature Reserve
Highmoor Nature Reserve is about 8 kms away. Highmoor has spectacular trout fishing dams and the widest panoramic views of the Drakensberg. There are two caves - Aasvoel Cave and Caracal Cave - both 2.5 km from the main office, and Fultons Rock, which has great rock paintings.
It is also one of the only places where you are actually walking on top of the foothills.
To enjoy some fly fishing at Highmoor Nature Reserve you will need to book permits as they restrict the number of anglers per day, but we at Kamberg Valley Hideaway can help organise this for you in advance of your stay.
Giants Castle Nature Reserve
Giants Castle Nature Reserve is approximately 30 kms by car and here there are numerous walking and hiking trails, from the leisurely, to the more strenuous, to the challenging. It is a beautiful drive to Giants Castle and worth the trip for the day, evening if you only wish to enjoy a short, leisurely walk.
Horse Riding Trails
Approximately 5 minutes by car from our self catering accommodation is Berg Trails, where you can enjoy a horse riding trail in the Southern Drakensberg. If this is something you would be interested in, please let us know and we can organise making a reservation for you.
Mountain Biking
Another very popular weekend activity is mountain biking and we are pleased to say that there are many great mountain biking trails in the Kamberg area of the Southern Drakensberg. In fact in September, there is a two-day event held for avid mountain bikers, known at the Kamberg Classic. We can provide you with accommodation for this event so just contact us for availability.
