Karoo Gariep Conservancy - The farms New Holme and Mieliefontein, district Hanover, nestles in the vast scrubland which is the Karoo.
More than two hundred million years ago this landscape was part of a large lake and a vista dotted with gigantic trees.
Situated on the Seekoei (Hippopotamus) River, New Holme & Mieliefonteins’ intrigue relics, features, sites, structures and other phenomena today bear mute testimony, not only to this early ecological system, but to a subsequent human saga spanning millennia.
The Seekoei River, is a veritable depository of evidence of much of these early living things. Thus fossils are exposed where the topsoil has been washed away and these indicate, and confirm, the rich variety of prehistoric life which once teemed in the Great Karoo, a veritable bird lovers paradise.
