Area Info:

Lying on the banks of the Sundays River, just 20 minutes’ drive from the coast of Port Elizabeth, lies Colchester, in a part of the country that remains largely unspoilt, surrounded by sand dunes that date back about 100 000 years. The dunes are teeming with wildlife - bushbuck, grysbok, bush pig and smaller animals like mice, meercats and mongooses, which make these beautiful hills made of sand, their home. Birders include Colchester in their itinerary and river cruises along the Sundays River reveal a wide variety of waders, heron, duck, colonies of Cape and masked weavers, and up to four different types of kingfisher. The Colchester salt pans are home to the greater and lesser flamingo, African pied avocet, the blue crane and a number of other waders. Swimming in the tidal pool is very popular, and the Addo Elephant Park is close by.

* Addo Elephant Park:
Situated in a malaria free area the magnificently diverse Addo Elephant Park offers a wide variety of game viewing, outdoor adventure, accommodation and cultural experiences.

* Alexandria Dunefield:
Alexandria Dunefield is a reserve on the Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape, that is privately owned by a family who has been farming chicory and livestock here since 1899. These extensive dunefields cover 142 square kilometers of ground, with some dunes being 2.5 kilometers wide and up to 140 meters high. Some Dunes are lush with vegetation while others lie bare. Amongst these massive mounds are many pockets of bushes that are home to small animals such as the Dune Gerbil which is endemic to South Africa and the Bush Pig, which can be spotted darting around. Vervet Monkeys and a variety of bird species can be seen amongst the dunes. A guided walk will show you possible remnants of human activity displayed by ‘shell middens’, which is a dump site or spot within a village or area used by early man to dispel their waste and unwanted things. These are often an indication of the type of food consumed. Learn about the geology of the dunes and the species that live in and around the area.

* Amakhala Game Reserve:
Amakhala Game Reserve is named after the Xhosa word meaning Aloes, the prolific indigenous plant found in this uniquely diverse province. Steeped in history and beauty, this 7000 hectare game reserve creates an ideal environment for an unforgettable safari and an intimate experience of the varied landscape, including breathtaking views of the Bushman’s River. Amakhala Game Reserve offers a range of morning and evening safaris and other activities to enable guests to experience the fascinating flora, fauna and birdlife of the Eastern Cape. This is your opportunity to return to nature. Go on game drives in an open Land Rover in search of our wildlife - lion, black & white rhino, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, black wildebeest, zebra, tortoise and over 16 antelope species - or take a night drive with cheese and wine sundowners before searching for elusive nocturnal animals such as lynx, porcupine and spring hare. Relax on a slow river cruise down the Bushman’s River. The riverine bushveld offers excellent bird watching with a good chance of seeing the majestic African Fish Eagle and all three species of Kingfisher. Amongst the game drinking at the river’s edge, the rare Cape Clawless Otter might also be sighted. A guided walk with one of the qualified rangers in the Amakhala Reserve will both fascinate and enthral you with an in-depth view into the hidden treasures of the African veld.
