Shimuwini is a Shangaan word meaning “The place of the Baobab”.
Shimuwini Bushveld Camp - Kruger Park is situated on the upper reaches of the Shimuwini Dam in the Letaba River about 50 km from the Phalaborwa Gate on the Mooiplaas Road. The surrounding vegetation is predominantly Mopane, but the Letaba river is lined with large trees, including the very large Baobab.
There are 15 family cottages spread out in a long, well-spaced line along the Shimuwini Dam with lovely views over the water, and a chance of seeing game on the far bank, and waterbirds, crocodiles as well as hippo in the dam.
The camp can accommodate a maximum of 71 visitors.
The Shimuwini Dam does not dry up during the dry season. The bird hide on the bank of the Shimuwini Dam is worth visiting.
