The Cavern Drakensberg Resort - High in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg, surrounded by towering mountains, forests and streams is a unique family resort - The Cavern.
Named after the “Cannibal Cavern”, it is situated on a private mountain reserve adjacent to the Amphitheatre Royal Natal National Park - a World Heritage Site.
This stunning full board Drakensberg resort has won numerous accolades. Superior suites, superior rooms and standard accommodation are available with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, forests and mountainside.
The Superior accommodation is set away from the resort, in tranquil gardens, with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.
The Cavern is set in a secluded valley beneath the massive sandstone cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg. The thatch accommodation and facilities blend beautifully with the natural surroundings of the area.
The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 213 species of birds, 150 species of trees and numerous wild animals.
Child Friendly
The Cavern is a child friendly family resort and has a separate children`s dining room for children under 7 years. The children`s dining room is also set up for entertaining kids during adult meals.
Children`s entertainment is organised in the afternoons on a daily basis and Nannies are available for hire outside of meal and organised children`s entertainment times.
During the day children are kept busy on the trampoline and jungle gym and there are pony rides twice a day. Canoes are available for hire on the dam and they can even try and fish. There is a small separate kiddies pool and an exciting kiddies slide into the large pool.

Meals
The Cavern Dining Room offers a Table d` hot menu. This is a set menu which includes a wide variety of meal choices, and always includes a vegetarian entre. Vegetarians are advised to let our Reservations office know prior to arrival. Regrettably, the Cavern does not have an a-la-carte Restaurant and we are unable to cater for other special dietary requirements.
A range of beers and a selection of South African wines are available. The Emaweni Cave bar is fully licenced, and operates between 12h00 & 23h00.
Accommodation
The Cavern offers two types of accommodation (Standard and Superior) which have been rated as a “Superior” family resort by the Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa.
Standard Accommodation
Our Standard accommodation is set in lush garden landscapes with a vibrant mix of indigenous planting, filled with the sounds of birdlife.
Each room has a patio to soak up the sun and enjoy the mountain splendour.
Superior Accommodation
Our finely appointed Superior accommodation has magnificent views of the surrounding mountains with private patios to soak up the sun, listen to the sounds of forest streams and relax in our mountain wilderness.
All Superior accommodation has a TV and bar fridge.
This Drakensberg resort offers daily guided hikes to such wonderful destinations as Thonsela Cave, Cannibal Cavern, Echo Cave and Sungubala amongst others.
For the more energetic, walks are organized to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre.
The Cavern offers an extensive range of sport and recreational facilities, from guided walks to horse trails through splendid scenery, jeep trips and trout fishing in five well stocked dams.
Swim in the rivers or in our large crystal clear swimming pool or choose from a variety of leisure activities, including tennis, bowls, volleyball, jogging, and mountain biking.
This standard family room sleeps 3 & consists of a king size double & a single bed in the same room. The room is spacious & comfortable, with en suite bath & shower, tea and coffee making facilities and a patio. We can fit a cot or 4-ft short bed.
From JHB, follow the N3 to Harrismith.
Then travel 5km on the N5 towards Bethlehem, turn left onto the R712/R74 towards Golden Gate (alternate route to Durban).
After 8km, turn left again towards Bergville on the R74.
After 34km, at the bottom of the Oliviershoek Pass, turn right towards the Northern Drakensberg.
Travel 6km, and turn right towards the Cavern (10km)
