Anysberg Nature Reserve (near Laingsburg in the Karoo) is a great place to escape the stresses of city life. It’s off the beaten track, not close to any noisy roads and has a lot to offer.
Since there are no dangerous predators, visitors are free to head into the veld. While there are no maintained footpaths,
areas can easily and safely be explored on foot – from dry riverbeds to kloofs, mountains and valleys. There are some very beautiful Koi San paintings in the reserve.
Another way to get around is by mountain bike. Bikes are available for rent from the office and you’re bound to see birds and animals as you ride along. On a hot summer’s day you’ll probably be tempted by the dam and the reserve has kayaks for rent. There’s also a pool and a jungle gym for children.
Anysberg has also introduced stargazing activities since it is far away from city pollution and artificial light sources.
Accommodation is provided in flat-roofed cottages surrounded by unspoilt veld and rugged mountains with views in every direction. The five cottages are basic – no electricity, just candles and a gas stove and fridge – but you won’t need any luxuries out there.
