Game viewing is the prime attraction of the the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve with the benefit of doing it as a self drive in your own vehicle. Viewing hides overlook waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.
The Park covers some 96 000 ha and renowned for its rich and diverse Wildlife, the park teems with a wide variety of fascinating fauna and flora including elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, blue wildebeest, giraffe, cheetah, hyena, and warthog and over 300 bird species.
The Hluhluwe section in the north is characterised by towering grassland hills and diverse terrain and vegetation and is exceptional for its rich variety of bird and animal life. The Imfolozi section in the south is characterised by wide open spaces and is a natural treasure store of fascinating fauna and flora.
Day 1:
From the N2 at Mtubatuba turn off on to the Nongoma road and enter the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve (Imfolozi section) via Nyalazi Gate.
On your way to Mpila Camp stop off at the new Centenary Capture Centre where you can purchase a light lunch. The animal pens, capture museum and audio visual presentation gives you a view into this fascinating world of conservation management and game capture.
At Mpila book into your comfortable chalet and relax. In the late afternoon drive down to the Unkaya Viewsite overlooking the Black Mfolozi River. Time spent here with binoculars can be very rewarding with buffalo, elephant and lion being frequent users of the sandbanks and reedbeds along this section of river.
Day 2:
The next day rise early and pack your breakfast and lunch for a fulfilling day in the beautiful west of the reserve. Make your way to the Sontuli loop, driving slowly, looking out for birds and animals. The Sontuli loop along the Black Mfolozi river is frequented by all of the big five and game viewing is very rewarding.
Sontuli picnic site on the river presents an ideal spot for breakfast. As you continue on around the loop and head for Mbhejane (Black Rhino) Hide in the Ngolotsha area animals abound.
Your evening is spent relaxing in front of your chalet on Mpila hill looking out over the Imfolozi wilderness.
Day 3:
Today you do not have to rise very early and can prepare breakfast at the camp. Pack your vehicle and drive, game viewing as you go, into Hluhluwe section which is the northern part of Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. This will give you the opportunity to see this more mountainous and forested part of the park.
Arrive at Hilltop Camp with its very scenic setting and views and enjoy a early lunch. Amenities at Hilltop include a swimming pool; a fully licensed restaurant; a curio shop; jungle gym; fuel pump station and kiddies corner facility. Book into your superbly appointed self-catering accommodation unit after 14h00.
An afternoon game drive on one of the loop roads will complete your day. Stop frequently at key points such as waterholes, river crossings and clumps of thorn trees and just look and listen and you will be rewarded with wonderful memories to draw on back in the workaday world.
Day 4:
After breakfast and calling at Hilltop reception, proceed to the Memorial Gate, whilst game viewing, to exit the Game Reserve.
