This Nature Reserve surrounds the Montloatse Setlogelo Dam in the south eastern Free State, next to the well-known Protea Hotel Black Mountain, about 70 km east of Bloemfontein.
The day visitors will find a well designed picnic area with barbeque facilities and an ablution block for his convenience. Conducted day and night wildlife sightseeing tours, and functions in a traditional Tswana stone lapa are arranged by the Protea Hotel Black Mountain.
A hall with barbeque and kitchen facilities for 100 people is available for conferences and functions.
The undulating grassy plains, embraced by wooded hills, with the mountain standing guard in the north, earned this area the name of ``Big Sky Country".
Well-known wildlife species such as the Zebra, black Wildebeest, Eland, Springbok, Blesbok, red Hartebeest and white Rhino are found here. More than a hundred species of birds, including a variety of aquatic species, have been recorded here. Large flocks of Blue Crane can, from time to time, be seen in the park.
A variety of activities, such as tennis, mini golf, gambling and cabaret shows are offered. The Park also has a 8 km hiking trail to the Thaba Nchu Mountain, where the hiker will get to know more about the Tswana culture and history. The Dam is also a popular angling area.
The summers are sunny and warm, ideal for outdoor activities. The winters are cold, though the days are usually sunny. Rain falls during summer, and usually in the form of thunderstorms.
The Thaba Hunting Camp can accommodate eight people and has a central kitchen and living area. This camp, as well as trophy hunting packages, is made available annually during winter to trophy hunters. Luxurious accommodation is provided by the Thaba Nchu Sun Hotel.
