The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is a 37000 ha, privately owned game reserve in the heart of the Waterberg. It first started as a conservation area in 1993 through a private sector initiative that resulted in the consolidation of numerous private farms.
It forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve which was officially declared by UNESCO in 2001 - currently covering an area in excess of 4000 km.
A number of luxurios private game lodges within the spectacular scenery of the Waterberg Mountains offer ultimate luxury and relaxation in the malaria free Game Reserve.
The Waterberg region has a long history of human occupation and evidence of Middle Stone Age, Late Stone Age (San and Khoi Khoi) and Iron Age inhabitation has been found in the area, of which two rock paintings sites also occur on Welgevonden.
The reserve is comprises mountainous terrain that is dissected by deep valleys and kloofs. Flat plateaus characterise most hilltops, and altitude varies from 1080 m to 1800 m above sea level in the southern section of the reserve.
The Waterberg region is known for a large variety in vegetation ranging from endless open plains to sheltered rock valleys to relish more intimate encounters with other fauna and flora.
With the leopard as a natural inhabitant, most of the other major game species have been successfully reintroduced into the reserve - such as lions, elephants, white rhino, buffalo and special antelope species such as sable, roan, and gemsbok.
Other species include antelope, giraffe, warthog, bush pig, aardvark, pangolin and many more. Black-backed jackals and the very rare brown hyena have also prospered in the conservancy.
Visitors are assured of exceptional game viewing. Including some of the best Rhino sightings on the continent. Rare game species includes Aardvark and Brown Hyena, Eland, Gemsbok, Tsessebe and Bush Pig.
Within Welgevonden 270 bird species have been recorded. For those who desire to spot the Big Five, admire various vegetation or simply enjoy magnificent scenery, Welgevonden's majestic landscape has a lot to offer.
