The Ben Lavin Nature Reserve is situated in the rolling foothills of the Soutpansberg and covers some 25 square kilometers. Visitors are allowed to explore the entire reserve at their leisure on foot, by car or mountain bike.
The reserve comprises mainly of sour mixed bushveld with riverine woodland along the dry watercourses and arid thornveld in the north-western section.
The reserve is crisscrossed with 45km network roads and four hiking trails, ranging from three to eight kilometers in distance. Bird viewing hides are strategically placed at waterholes and allow for optimal birding.
Three mountain bike trails add an interesting option. There are no dangerous animals in the reserve, hence the freedom of movement on foot.
More than 50 mammal and 230 bird species occur, including birds of special interest such as gymnogene, gorgeous bush shike and bronzewinged courser. The reserve runs several birding safaris during the year and this is an ideal opportunity to explore the prolific birdlife of the far Limpopo Province.
Experienced field staff also conduct regular birding walks and night drives. A comprehensive bird list with a map is available at the office.
