The OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary is a quite well-known bird sanctuary in orthnilogical circles, and famed for the number of different species at the sanctuary.
As in several other centres, the sewage treatment plant in Potchefstroom provides purified water for many bird species - especially waterbirds and waders - in an easily accessible environment of open grassveld, reed, eucalyptus and willow.
An area of 72 ha near the south end of town (turn from Mooi River Drive into Viljoen Street) adjoining the golf course, is open at all times and, in addition to more than 200 bird species, is home to several species of small mammal, including mongoose, otter and small rodents.
The sanctuary area, which was opened in 1988, is well developed and well maintained, and offers an information kiosk, two hides, toilets, paths and park benches. In addition, there are two hikes - the Squacco Heron Route (4 km) and the Grey Heron Route (9 km).
Bird-ringing is done on the first Sunday of every month, from very early in the morning to about noon. The sanctuary is always open and there is no entrance fee. A guard is on duty during working hours.
