The village took its name from the Voortrekker description of its river - "mooi" translates as pretty, but in Zulu, however, the river is 'Mpofana' - Place of the Eland.
A significant stretch of the Midlands Meander is located in the Mooi River Region. This popular self-drive arts and crafts route is fun to explore and allows you to shop for handmade goods from woven rugs, leatherwork and ceramics to wooden furniture and jewellery.
All around Mooi River are opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The Weston Agricultural Museum houses photographs and documents depicting the history of the school and district. the college is an old military site, and British army artefacts and buildings are part of the site.
The Rhode House Museum offers a variety of local history exhibits depicting activities of the area such as dairying and polo. It occupies the former home of Edgar Rhode, a prominent resident who chaired the first town board in 1921.
