Muizenberg is a famous seaside resort of yesteryear, with its attractive multicoloured changing booths gracing the beach that stretch for miles. The wooden booths form a popular background for photo and fashion shoots.
Muizenberg lies some 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town (south) and can be reached by Metro train from the main station in Cape Town.
In 1795 the British defeated the Dutch in the Battle of Muizenberg and later Muizenberg became a military base.
At the beginning of the 20th century Muizenberg became a prestigious seaside resort for affluent Capetonians. The grand mansions along the beach promenade are monuments of the former wealth of Muizenberg.
Swimming is safe and surfing excellent at Muizenberg, with water temperatures much higher than Cape Town and surroundings. Due to the warm Mozambique currents of the east coast the water is considerably warmer than on the western Atlantic coast.
The bay is called "False Bay", because many years back, some ships coming from the east would stop in this bay mistaking it to be Table Bay.
There is a panoramic view of the bay from Boyes Drive above Muizenberg. The train follows the coast from Muizenberg to Simon's Town and offers spectacular views of False Bay.
A combination of mountain, beach and vlei, this village offers much in the way of accommodation, restaurants and other amenities.
At the northern end of Muizenberg lies the Zandvlei Nature Reserve on a lagoon. It is the breeding ground for many bird species and a popular picnic area.
