At the Southern entrance to the magnificent Meiringspoort lies the scenic village of De Rust, where Bill and Christina avid birders and owners of Housemartin Guest Lodge will welcome you.
In the garden of the 110 year old Victorian manor house are twelve en-suite luxury guest rooms; each with there own verandah leading onto the gardens, orchard and sparkling pool.
In the rooms you will find port, muscadel, homemade biscuits and rusks. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and magazines.
The atmosphere lures the guests into gentle relaxation after a day exploring the walking and biking trails in the area. Birding, cycling, wine tasting on the local estates.
The Plough Restaurant
Situated at the corner of Schoeman and Burger Streets in the centre of De Rust. The Plough is owned by Bill and Christina Martin.
Christina is internationally known as Chef de Cuisine. Her School of Food and Wine was voted in the top three worldwide in 2002.
Christina specializes in South African cuisine in her new restaurant, making use of seasonal and organic produce wherever possible. She buys the best Karoo lamb and her steaks dont need steak knives.
Ostrich cappaccio, Bobotie with homemade blatyang are some of the starters. Ostrich fillet with Port and plum sauce, Oxtail Jardinire are hot favorites. Desserts and cakes a plenty are all simply delicious.
A stay at Housemartin is about relaxation - stroll around our beautifully landscaped garden, filled with an array of mature friut trees and an abundant selection of birds, or soak up the sun around our heated swimming pool.
For the more energetic the area offers numerous walks and hiking trails, birding trips, scenic drives through the Swartberg, cycling, and tours through the wine route.
Directions from George Airport to Housemartin Guest Lodge :
De Rust. Airport exits onto R404 turn left.
Travel +- 100m you come to a four way stop, continue straight over on the R404.
Follow the R404 through the country past the strawberry fields and Fancourt, continue along with the R404 through the built up area of Blanco keeping left on the R404.
Follow that until it joins the up with the N9.
Turn left onto the N9 travelling 18.3 kms and turn left onto the N12 - Oudtshoorn.
Travel 34kms which will bring you to the centre of Oudtshoorn.
Turn right into Voortrekker Road and which becomes the N12 or (Route 62) and drive towards Beaufort West for approximately 33kms which will bring you into De Rust.
We are on the Main road on the right hand side, a huge yellow wall opposite the Caltex Garage - 16 Schoeman St, De Rust .
